I met these dudes playing before Casiotone for the Painfully Alone in St. Louis as I was passing through to Cape Girardeau. Their initial friendliness made me a bit nervous at first as like many Missouri bands, I was afraid they might be terrible and I would then feel obligated to say they were good ect...

but alas, they were fantastic. The shows was energetic and featured each of the four band members switching instruments with each song as well as a fantastic life sized! Shaq head in cardboard.

Try Brother, their debut CD is much more hushed and laid back than the live show, but is a incredibly good collection of well recorded and emotionally toned tracks.

Anyways, get their record and you won't regret it.

Atelophobia is the first track from another experimental project I'm playing with. Spirit Size tracks are meant to be listened to at a campfire or a lonely night be yourself in the countryside. Yet its danceable. Recorded live and other tracks will be played live and recorded solely with a tape recorder and released only for sale on cassette(and online here of course).

But here is Atelophobia(the fear of everything), enjoy... =)

I got slightly tripped out hearing "It Won't Be Long" on the radio tonight driving home...probably not to many people listening at 4:30 in the AM but I was, and Peter is a badass DJ....and "IWBL" features vocals by Maddie...great stuff, it'll appear on a cassette release in the near future, the cassette itself is completely put together, just working on the artwork...

I sold a record tonight! Successfully DJ'd an entire fashion show with my music(was stressful but worth it) and am now home relaxing and playing Left4Dead...but I sold a record... =)

First Official Release?

Maddie, my girlfriend, is the main contributor in outfits to her fashion show, and pulled me in to create the music for the whole show after not being able to air licensed tracks on the local TV channel. As a result, I wrote 10 dance tracks for the show in the last two weeks and mixed it into a hour and a half of previously recorded material. I'm selling copies at the show as everyone who has heard it has loved it so far. Maybe I'll actually make some money from music finally? Woah....

Also, kodak wanted its 16mm film back and me being a nice person sent it back. I am supposed to receive the super 8mm developed film of Sunflowers from the film lab today though from where I will edit/score and probably post it here for your viewing pleasure.

(and potentionally a music video also in the near future...like for real finally...soon...)

I'm just at the point where I feel I need to find some success somehow. Limited because of my surroundings here in Rolla, but I can't keep that from stopping me.

Anyone out there interested in collaborating musically?
(I'm gonna work on remixing you Marilyn either later tonight or tomorrow-perhaps a collab track?.)

Needing Sunlight Badly

I'm feeling pretty melancholy since I've been so busy lately and indoors almost the whole time since I got back from California...but right now my computer is churning out another ambient piece similar to "Asleep." This one is titled "Quiet" and I don't know for sure how it will sound. But its a fun experiment and If it's as good as a sleep/relaxing aid as "Asleep" then I'll feel I've succeeded.

And...more Friend John will come, probably with warmer weather, I'm just going through an ambient phase right now...

Btw, the above photo is of the creek that runs next to my parents house where I grew up...Missouri is a beautiful place, it just takes time away from here to realize it sometimes...

I'm leaving the Beach city of Redondo to go back to the forest "city" of Rolla where I live on a county road with only a dozen neighbors, only one within sight...hmmm...
but I shot a couple of Super 8 rolls that I might make into a music video...if I exposed them properly since I forgot how bright it was even on cloudy days in LA...shot an entire roll in PV at the Korean Bell...with a beautiful panoramic view of the harbor...but I get to leave all this for the Missouri countryside, which is beautiful in its own right.

and... Ratatat is playing at the Blue Note Tuesday, so there's that to look forward to!

A new sun rose over the solitary house, halfway illuminating trees and casting their shadows over the countryside. The sunflowers were starting their cycle of staring into the sky, as in the distance a rooster heralded the new day.

Across town, Susy Marks was just waking up, getting herself dressed for school. Groggy eyed, she brushed her teeth and hair, and stumbled down the stairs for breakfast with her parents. Cereal finished, Susy picked up her backpack, checked for the pencils she would need. It was Wednesday, and Mrs. Erikson had told them they would be writing letters to the elderly. Susy was almost jumping as she held her mother’s hand, standing outside in the early dawn, waiting for her bus to arrive.

“Dear. Mr. Simon, I hope you are ok. Today’s gonna be so pretty…”

Seventy years had taken their toll on Tom Simon, and despite the morning’s beauty he sighed as he turned sad eyes to the mist rising off the nearby pond. Another day, simply another day. That was how Mr. Simon viewed the dawn.

“…I wonder what it is like to get old. Mommy tells me it’s not fun.”

Sitting up in his bed, Mr. Simon gazed out at the pond before finally rising to start his day. He could no longer sleep as long as he used to. With careful and precise steps, Mr. Simon wandered slowly to his kitchen and picked up the plate of sunflower seeds that would consume much of his day.

Taking a seat on the weathered rocking chair on his front porch, he held the first seed up to the light, eying its imperfections and feeling its ridges with his wrinkled fingers before popping it into his mouth. Spitting the shell into a bowl on the ground, he leaned back and picked up another seed.

“…daddy told me to never grow old. Is it really as bad as he told me?”

Another sunflower seed fell into the plate, and another and another, the soft ‘thlick’ of shell after shell hitting the bowl marking the hours of his day. This was Mr. Simon’s life, had been for the fifteen years since he retired. Seed followed by seed, shell by shell. He knew this was probably not healthy, but having seen enough years Mr. Simon was not too concerned. While he did not yearn for death, he did not fear it, either. After such a long isolation, it would be a welcome change.

Hours passed as Mr. Simon spat sunflower seeds and stared into the distant countryside through heavy lidded eyes. The sun, momentarily atop the world, shone more brilliantly than Mr. Simon would have expected on an October day. Another seed fell into the bowl, but Mr. Simon ignored the echo. Dust was rising in the distance; something was happening.

Mr. Simons interest was piqued as the cloud of dust began reflecting light off metal. A car was moving towards his house. People seldom ventured this far out into the countryside, and it was even rarer that a car stopped at Mr. Simon’s house.

The muscles in Mr. Simon’s face tightened and his pupils widened as the car approached … and passed. Mr. Simon lowered his eyes, picked up a sunflower seed and began the pattern again. Sunflower shell after sunflower shell ‘thlick’ed into the bowl until Mr. Simon fell asleep.

“…are you lonely Mr. Simon?”

Mr. Simon started awake at the sound of the voice, eyes widening as he took in the mailman standing above him. “I’m sorry to disturb you, uh, Mr. Simon,” the mailman said, holding out a letter. “I would have left this in your mail box, only, well, I couldn’t find it. Sorry.”

Mr. Simon opened his mouth, and uttered the first words he had spoken in what seemed like forever. Somehow, he made them intelligible. “Are… are you, sure you have the right house?”

Without much pause the mailman responded. “This is 31445 Johnson Street, right? Tom Simon?”

Mr. Simon’s eyes were reddening as he stared at the impossible white envelope. “Yes sir. That’s me.” Who would be writing him?

The mailman paused and looked back down at the letter. “Well here you go, then. Again, sorry to wake you.” Mr. Simon could only nod as he focused on the letter, already forgetting that the mailman was there.

Running his hands over the envelope once, twice, as if to ensure it really existed, Mr. Simon studied the shaky handwriting of his address as if for a clue as to who had sent it. The unfamiliar return address, all that was printed in the upper left corner, wasn’t much help. The slowly receding sound of the mailman’s car was replaced by the soft rip of paper as Mr. Simon cautiously opened up the envelope, unfolding the paper within with trembling hands. Mr. Simon could barely contain his excitement as he opened the first letter he had received in years.

“Dear Mr. Simon…

Mr. Simon’s eyes began to tear from the strain. He stared with anticipation into the letter. His face unmoving, the sunflower seeds in his lap forgotten, he read further.

“…never get old…”

Mr. Simon giggled, as close to a laugh as he could manage. After so long, he could barely remember what a laugh was.

“…is you as lonely as dad says old people are…”

Mr. Simon’s eyes, watering from the strain, reddened further. He had not blinked in the minutes reading the letter had taken him, but his eyes were not the source of his pain. The bowl rang with the soft splash of tears.

“…write me back, and with much love,

Susy Marks.”

Birds chirped in the distance and while Mr. Simon had been lost to the passage of time, the sun had begun its descent. Deeply touched by its contents, he finally closed the letter. Levering himself out of the rocker, he made his way inside, to eat, and to think.

* * *

Beside the leftovers of his dinner sat a typewriter, the dust blown off it still lingering in the air. It emitted another sound long forgotten. Frail hands slowly typing out the letter. Slowly but surely they released a storm of thoughts, long restricted. The buzzing of the fluorescent light above Mr. Simon’s head flowed into the sound of the typewriter, as the sounds of an owl on the nearby pear tree blurred into the background.

The lamp above his bed had become the only light in the house. Putting down the letter from Susy and picking up his own response, he began to read it to himself.

“…yes, it is lonely when you grow old. I wish I only could be young again like you and experience all the things that make life so beautiful again from young eyes…”

Mr. Simon forsook his schedule. On an ordinary night he would have been long asleep by the time he gave his letter a final approving nod. He had spent hours polishing and fixing his perfect letter with an almost renewed spirit. Exhausted, he placed the letter on the table underneath his lamp and, with a tug of the string and a single sigh, extinguished the light.

The house lay silent. Its creaks and groans echoed quietly down its hallways, the rocking chair outside empty of its usual inhabitant. Sunflower seeds on a plate untouched and unwanted.

“Your letter means so much to me. More than you can understand for now. But some day, you will understand. Stay young, and beautiful as I’m sure you are. I’ve had a hard life, I have gotten lonely with age, but my life has been made so much sweeter by your words. Thank you so much. Please write me back!

A still figure lay on the bed, legs curled, gaunt face motionless. And smiling.

Two new songs....one is about being OCD and the other successfully made my girlfriend giggle...oh, and purchased Dark Was the Night on vinyl, as should you... and lastly am seeing Cut Copy Tuesday night and flying out to L.A. Wednesday morning...

and I think I'm changing from sharing records to only my own stuff, since I don't have time to upload much and will put more focus in that department on A&A.

Future Plans

I am interested in doing work with vocalists though I know of none around me in my current town of residence, so if you read this, and you love singing, let me know and I would love to work with you! And everything we do will be free for download on my site and various others, as I am not looking for a profit but rather experience and further ways to create music.

Eventually I would like to offer the option to purchase my records if there is a desire for a hard professional copy on disk or vinyl as the next record I am putting out will hopefully be created over the year of 2009 and released sometime in 2010.

The concept, I am driving from Missouri to Canada with my girlfriend and then through Maine and New York State, as neither of us have been to those areas. It will be an adventure and hopefully inspire some interesting songs.

So, I hope you enjoy my previously released works, Version for Maddie, Arctica, and Her House Was Haunted! I am starting what I'm calling "The 2010 Record" which will be centered around live performance versus digital composition. Oh, and hopefully a duet record with a vocalist sometime in 2009 would be nice as well! =)

Maybe I Miss You EP

Here is an EP of the best out takes from my recordings during August through the end of November 2008 that produced my record titled "Her House Was Haunted." These are some tracks that were I really enjoyed but hurt the flow of the final record and I ended up cutting from it. There were easily a dozen tracks remaining that we're either unfinished at the time of my hard drive failing and me loosing the project files and some that I just didn't feel were ready yet.

"Her House Was Haunted" is much different than this EP would have you believe and focuses on strong melodies rather than danceability. I would label the record as folktronic and glitch. While I am still waiting for the artwork for the record, it is completely finished and I am taking a break from making music and shifting gears as I work on several film projects.

They are a bit sketchy but I found them rather enjoyable. They are offshoots of the Portlanded album I never released but took tracks from to form the Arctica(or You Just Have to Exist) record. Hearts in Clouds - Talk About Talk

Although this has already been posted, here is an update...this is my debut as "Hearts in Clouds." Since its release last year, a new member has been added for vocals and her lyrical creativity and several contributers, a guitarist and drummer have jumped on board. "Talk About Talk" is instrumental and heavily sample driven and consists of music produced during the summer of 2007. The artist may come up as Meon Dance Machine which was the original name during production...but it has changed to Hearts in Clouds.

The followup has begun production and will consist of a different perhaps more pop-oriented sound than this while still retaining some of the experimental makeup. So enjoy this debut and tell me what you think, and perhaps would you would like to hear in a sophomore record.

NOTE: This is kind of like a bonus to Version for Maddie, please listen to that album(its far superior)
"Arctica or You Just Have to be There" contains songs recorded before "Version for Maddie" from 2005 through 2008. Basically, I've made a lot of music, and sometimes like to place songs together into albums that flow. That is what VfM was, just a collection of songs with a similar idea. This collection focuses more on the darker and yet more beautiful side of the seasons change from summer/fall to winter. Most of the songs were written during colder times and have turned out to be more personal melodies reflecting how I felt better than the songs on VfM.

Music I Loved Before Indie: Banco de Gaia

I have a series of posts actually ready finally and am starting them off today with this episode. These are artists/bands that I liked before I got into independent music and influenced me at an early age musically. For each artist I have made a compilation of songs from their multiple albums.

Banco de Gaia

Banco de Gaia is the alias for Toby Marks, a British musician with a passion for ethnic percusion heavy music that tells stories of a world haunted by strife but also full of beauty. Beginning with the epic tale of the Chinese occupation of Tibet and the railroad China built through the ancient land in "Last Train to Lhasa," Marks has gone from telling ethnic stories of the past all the way to those of the technology on the rise during the end of the 20th century.

Without a single album that I do not enjoy by Marks, he is easily still one of my favorite musicians despite my change in musical taste. Discovering BdG in the 90's perhaps did the most to broaden my musical taste and allow me to develop as I have musically. The magical sounds of Banco de Gaia are indeed a treasure that everyone should have the opportunity to discover and enjoy.

Cut Copy, the whole reason my girlfriend and I chose Pitchfork instead of Lollapalooza, ended up getting delayed at the airport with their plane from Australia, and were over an hour late before getting to play(though play well they did) three magical songs before Pitchforks now infamous curfew went into affect. On the upside, I did get to experience Bradford Cox, King Khan and Jay Reatard destroy a stage...though it was hardly a replacement, it was appreciated. I do feel somewhat bad for Cut Copy as they did fly a long way just to end up being late...oh well. What can I say though, Animal Collective was an incredibly experience and ended up being worth the price of admission, and I got to see The Dark Knight at a 12:01 am showing(yes, it really was that great if you are one of the few who hasn't seen it). So my trip was fun despite a few bumps along the way. I'll post more later about it along with some new music that will be featured online here for the first time.

Oh...and I have successfully not smoked for over a month now...and I feel great about myself...

I think one of my favorite things to do is to relax, lay back, and listen to music. The last HiC mix was when I was at a university I didn't feel connected to and since then much has changed. Despite a busy summer working most of the time and having returned to my home town that I've mixed feelings about, I have a girl I am in love with and a sense of security that comes with knowing I have someone who cares about me. High Places are certainly interesting. Their music is certainly perfect for studying/writing to by helping induce a relaxing creative environment, which also means none of the songs really stand out and grab your attention. Maybe they purposefully don't try to. Perhaps I need to pay more attention to their songs next time I give their album a listen and perhaps take a break from writing. Pitchfork sure though seems to have taken a liking to them...

Woah crazy. Its already January 2nd in the year of our lord 2008. 2007 was a completely crazy year for me but through everything that happened, has taught me many things and helped me gain confidence in myself. 2008 for me started out in St. Louis and upon entering Rolla found someone had written "I 'heart' U" on my rear view mirror. Intriguing! This was followed by Nathan and myself watching part of "Last Person in the Universe" and a motel burning down. What a night. If this is any indication of what 2008 will be like, I'm excited.

It just turned 12:00. So yea. Its Christmas. I'm not to ecstatic as its just another day for me pretty much. Well, I'll get some gifts...socks from grandma, ect...but for whatever reason, really for a lot of reasons, I'm just not happy right now. Maitta feels the same. We're just not happy, and something needs to happen for both of us to change this.

On another note, I collected together 120 of the songs I have made. I estimate a decent 20 or so missing songs that who knows where ended up...but out of these 120 I picked 19 to put together in a collection representing my last four years of musical endeavors. Tonight I made another track that fits into the experimental theme of material I have been working on as "Portlanded." At the rate I am going with musical production right now, I will have an mountain of tracks that will be created in 2008 and who knows where my style and sound will go...

And Maitta just called me wishing a me a Merry Christmas! Probably the best gift I will get I just received, a faithful friend close enough to wish me Merry Christmas from a far enough away place. =) And she inspired me to pass her call on to someone else, even more incredibly far away. I messaged Maria, a friend and mentor who resides in Argentina, who I hadn't talked to for months now, and we talked like time hadn't passed and we had been great friends only yesterday. She works for a magazine now and is living an eventful life which gives me hope for the future.

So its Christmas again! Again. again. yay. So I feel like writing before I make a song, here goes...

I am sitting in a Panera sipping on my free coffee made possible by someone a little more joyous about the 25th than myself. My sister is home for the holiday, though currently preoccupied by an old friend and another friend won't answer the phone leaving me somewhat bored and lonely.
On the way, Maitta called, she was bored as well and this saddened me as it brightened my mood as I realize how much I will miss her when I do not return to Warrensburg. And now I think about Warrensburg, and my reasons leaving that place. Part of me is now free from there, another misses the experience.
Warrensburg makes Rolla seem dull when it comes to diversity. All my friends are white here, in Warrensburg, this was not the case, and I miss it. I miss the fun I had in discovering the fun to be had with peoples of other color of skin. I miss the changes it presented for me and now I am bored with all white friends. I wont lie, I was at first uncomfortable with the African Americans I would later call my best friends as I had never formed relationships with people outside of white or Asian backgrounds. I choose to grow comfortable though and as a result found some people who genuinely cared about me and one particular individual who would become my best friend. I am changed because of this, and it is for the positive, and now I cannot go back to the ignorant individual I was.
But I am home again, and I have some truly great friends here that I am now getting to spend time with. Yes there are some complications, I am still single and very much despise someone who walked over me and sits conveniently in the center of everything, but I suppose all is going alright. As of last night I changed, and didn't stop caring about these troubles, but for some reason, they quit bothering me. I'm sure they will in the near future, or maybe not, but right now I feel somewhat secure and ok with the situation that is my life.
New Years. Shit. I know that won't be fun. I mean, it will in the sense of celebration of a new year, but it will mean another year of personal failure and another time I fail to succeed in my New Years resolution that I have failed in time and again. Since 04/05's New Year change, I have still failed to end the new year in a kiss. It means more that just a simple kiss, it means to end the new year in a relationship with someone who cares for me. Someone I love and who loves me. I don't suppose eight days will change this as two years have been wrought with failure for me in this goal. My heart sinks though when the new year comes and I am alone.
And I am alone. A friend complains to me how he hasn't gotten any action in months. I want to yell at him about how long the last two years have been for me where I have not experienced one single moment of intimacy. Not one single kiss. Only betrayal, usage of my emotions, and rejection have presented themselves to myself for two years.
But I am suddenly ok with it. I realize I have some amazing friends who care about me, and realize how much more I have then most people in that sense. I'll just have to stay myself and wait for a relationship, or forget about having one and someday I hope it'll just happen. I'll meet someone who isn't interested in drama, someone who has a genuine heart and cares about mine. Yeah its a lot to hope for, an idealist view. But I have hope.

Portlanded is my new project. Its basically thus far five songs I have made on my laptop in the past week. Its the first time I've put my vocals to my music and I'm happy with the result. I am doing a lot of sampling, but this time to much less recognizable notice and am doing away my older style of classic electronica and synth pop to an experimental realm, and strangely, the songs are pouring out and at one song a day as I've been doing, I'll have quite a bit of material out there before long...

Originally I had scheduled to have my wisdom teeth pulled during thanksgiving break. I decided though that I needed a real break, and this being the first week I'd have off from college, I decided I should make the best of it. Well, what would happen anyways would end up worse than suffering through the consequences of a wisdom teeth extraction and it would seem that my break was ruined and thanksgiving for me would be an oxymoron.
Then something happened. In an attempt to take my mind off of said event I traveled over to Nathan Showalters house where the man himself and Ben Landers were conversing with a goal in mind, to make music. I had made a synth line on my macbook but couldn't make it go with any tune, Nathan and Ben had been experimenting with Bass and Guitar being played with a Violin string, and we figured out a connection.
The most beautiful song I have had a part in making resulted and now, back at school in my dorm after a particularly unparticular day, I added some sounds and my voice to the mix. The song, thus far titled "Actica" features Ben Landers on Guitar(with bow), Nathan Showalter on Bass, and myself on synths/beats/vocals. Nathans friend whom I have never met named Ingrid Chiles called after the recording and spawned a realization in my mind that her name was perhaps one of the prettiest names ever and decided to name the project after her.
It is ten minutes and very experimental, but extremely peaceful and transcends Nathan and my desires to someday live in Iceland. Enjoy, and various changes may be made in the near future, or maybe not...
